Social networking is the name for any website where people interact with each other and build personal networks. It seems like there are more social networking websites every day. People love to participate in these sites and meet new people. Facebook and MySpace are the popular examples of this idea. People create free accounts, add their friends, post pictures and sometimes meet new people.
The internet has given people the opportunity to collaborate with people all over the globe and to “collect” thousands of acquaintances. Who could say that they had 10,000 “friends” before social networking sites?
Social networks enable people to interact with each other and make new friends. As someone who is trying to promote products or services, this can be used to your advantage. You can learn more about what people want in your area or in other parts of the world. If you are trying to decide where to market your business, this can be a great tool. What are your friends in New York looking for? What is popular right now in Seattle? Once you begin talking to these strangers, it should not be hard to get more information about the market in their area.
Most people who participate in Facebook or MySpace are wary of strangers who start asking them questions and sending friend requests. Chances are, you will not be able to grow your network without some effort. Social networking users are bombarded with spam all day, so you need to stand out. Send a personalized message before you send a friend request. Once you are on someone’s friend list, make an effort to comment on their photos and their status updates. This will build a trusting friend relationship.

Madiha,
I would say that it helps to pick your ‘friends’ wisely. Find people that have something in common with you and that you feel you will be a benefit to. Rather than just grabbing at every member. Many others will look to see who you are associated with before they accept or decline your invite.
Once you do build trust your friends are normally happy to pass along your name if they find someone that is interested in what you have to offer.
It’s just like the real world. people want a relationship that is a two way street, not just a person that expects 1 person to do all the giving.
Most of all be yourself!
