Social networking sites are buzzing these days with the news – the Yahoo!Mash network is closing. Yes, it’s true. Yahoo! community manager, Matt Warburton, has officially announced that this service will not be available after September 29, 2008. Below is his e-mail, issued to all members in the Mash network.

Dear Yahoo! Mash member,

Thank you for trying out our Mash Beta service. We hope you had fun with it.

Please note that we will shut down Mash on September 29, 2008. As a result, your current profile on Mash will no longer be available. We strongly recommend that you return to http://mash.yahoo.com and copy the content that you wish to save onto a separate document.

For a list of FAQs, please refer to the Mash Help Page.

Thanks for trying out Mash!

People are reacting differently to this decision made by Yahoo! Some believe it was not at all an impressive service and that Yahoo! made the right decision. Now they are not wasting their resources on this program any more. However, Yahoo!Mash fans argue that even though the service was in its initial stages, it still offered some great features. I have read posts on various blogs on this issue and my impression is that the majority of users favor it. Mashable has published the post written by Mark Rizzn Hopkins, “Yahoo!Mash has been Quashed,” which analyzes this decision quite realistically. The author says,

I can’t say I’m particularly surprised.  The few times I ever played with the service, I didn’t see anything particularly enthralling about the service over and above what was already offered by the pre-existing social network offering from Yahoo 360, and judging from the traffic patterns, most of the rest of you felt the same way.

Yahoo Mesh

I took a look at the Quantcast numbers, which showed an embarrassing slope in usage over the year since its launch, ending with an estimated monthly pageview count for the service around 2,000.  Not two million.  Two thousand.

Clearly not the home-run they were looking for.

I have found the same opinion on ZD.Net blog in the post, “Say Goodbye to Yahoo!Mash.” The author of the post says,

I’m glad Yahoo! isn’t wasting any more resources on this project. It was a cool idea, and the technology behind it is fascinating, but they didn’t apply it effectively.

By reading these two reviews, I am convinced that the Yahoo!Mash social network was unable to create the desired impact in the social networking and bookmarking domain. There are many reasons for this failure. The truth is that Yahoo!Mash is no more! But don’t lose heart Yahoo!Mash fans… maybe we will see another great joint venture from these two tech gurus someday soon.
